Experiencing one of the world’s Blue Zones

April 11-17, 2027

Costa Rica is renowned for its ecotourism, vibrant biodiversity, and status as one of the world’s “Blue Zones”—regions where people live the longest and healthiest lives. The country’s 27 national parks protect diverse ecosystems, and the lifestyle here centers on daily mobility, fresh air, and whole, unprocessed foods. This makes Costa Rica an ideal destination for travelers seeking both adventure and wellness.

Here is an overview of our dedicated Costa Rica tour, designed for women with diabetes who want safe, supported, restorative travel experiences. If you are a woman living with diabetes and want to explore Costa Rica without compromising your health, this trip is for you. The program emphasizes wellness, relaxation and adventure, so you can travel confidently with diabetes while enjoying Costa Rica’s beauty and culture.

While Costa Rica offers almost unlimited accessible nature excursions with flexible pacing for people with diabetes, Costa Rica’s tropical climate, especially in coastal areas where temperatures exceed 30°C, can quickly degrade insulin and other medications. Our diabetes-friendly small group journeys give you better control over meals, activity, hydration and blood sugar management than large group tours!

Itinerary

(We recommend arriving in Costa Rica the day before the trip begins and staying at a hotel near Liberia Airport.) Day 1 is dedicated to embracing the Blue Zone lifestyle with ease and peace of mind. We’ll transfer together into the geothermal canyon of Río Perdido (about 1.5 hours). Once settled into your elevated forest bungalow, unpack and exhale… and enjoy the property.

Experience

  • Unwind by the pool or slip into the thermal river.
  • Gather for a welcome dinner under the stars to get to know your fellow travelers, share experiences, and learn more about the week ahead.
  • Dinner is included tonight

Please note: We recommend arriving the evening before and staying near the airport. Don’t forget to keep your diabetes supplies in your carry-on luggage. Costa Rica allows a personal supply of medications for up to 90 days. You may want to bring along a letter from your physician outlining your diabetes management.

Guanacaste is home to Miravalles Volcano National Park and Palo Verde National Park (home to migratory birds, crocodiles, monkeys, deer, coati, and jaguarundi).

Accommodations

Overnight: Rio Perdido Hotel

Rio Perdido is a boutique resort in the forests of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region, with unique forest bungalows featuring outdoor terraces in the trees. Bungalows have wifi, mini fridges (diabetic-friendly insulin storage! Remember that insulin degrades above 25°C) and A/C. The in-house restaurant features its own organic garden. Most food that is not grown at the resort is sourced locally. A Costa Rican spa is also available, offering a wide selection of treatments.

After breakfast, we have a guided hike through the dry forest ecosystem, observing tropical flora and fauna. This is one of Costa Rica’s least-visited ecosystems—home to howler monkeys, coatis, and over 300 bird species. Beforehand, we’ll talk about the art of managing diabetes tech during activity in hot, humid climates. After lunch, you can do more hiking, soak in the thermal river and the mineral-rich volcanic mud, luxuriate in a spa treatment, or enjoy coaching on a wellness topic of your choice. All meals are included today. Spa treatments are paid separately.

Accommodations

Overnight Rio Perdido

After breakfast, we’ll prepare for a guided river tubing journey down the geothermal river system of Río Perdido, floating past dramatic rock walls and warm geothermal springs. Most of the course is a mellow float down the gentle canyon current, but be prepared for some exciting slides and rapids. We’ll look for wildlife such as tiger herons, howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, bats, and possibly large cats. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory for river tubing. Make sure to bring insect repellent, sunblock, and, of course, your swimsuit!

In the afternoon, you can enjoy the thermal river, swimming pool, another hike, coaching, or relax and watch the sunset. Tonight we have an informal Zoom session with a stellar Certified Diabetes Educator. What have you always wanted to know about diabetes? Bring your questions! All meals are included today.

On Day 5, we bid farewell to the canyon and travel toward the Pacific Coast to Playa Hermosa, a stunning and relaxed beach village in this Blue Zone area.

Playa Hermosa is a relaxed beach community on Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific coast, known for its calm waters, wide sandy beach, and laid-back atmosphere. Quieter and more intimate than nearby resort towns, it’s an ideal place to slow down after a few days of adventure. Spend your time swimming, strolling along the shore, enjoying the beachfront restaurants, or simply watching the sun set over the Pacific.

When you arrive, we’ll check in and get settled. Lunch and dinner are on our own today, and there are many local places to try fresh, wholesome coastal cuisine.

Accommodations

HOTEL: Bosque del Mar

Bosque del Mar is a boutique hotel facing the sea in Hermosa Beach, in the exuberant Gulf of Papagayo, Guanacaste. First-class hospitality, service, gastronomy, and a strong commitment to environmental responsibility are reflected in eco-friendly facilities and sustainable practices. Just steps from the beach, revitalize your senses with the gentle sound of waves, ancient trees, and wildlife in our jungle- style gardens.

There are also more active options for you like kayaking, paddle boarding, or a wildlife tour (https://www.bosquedelmar.com/tours-en/)

Lunch is on our own today. In the late afternoon, we board a private catamaran for a sunset cruise along the Pacific coast.
