The T1D Globetrotter’s Essential Checklist

I know that over-preparing is the secret to under-stressing. Use this list to ensure your bag is packed for every “low glucose alarm in a weird place”.

1. The “Double or Nothing” Rule

  • Insulin: Pack 2x or 3x what you think you’ll need (split between your carry-on and a backup bag).
  • Sensors & Infusion Sets: Assume one will fail, one will sweat off, and one will get ripped off by a narrow doorway in Rome.
  • Batteries & Charging Cables: Bring a dedicated power bank for your phone/CGM receiver.

2. The “Low” Kit

  • Fast-Acting Carbs: Glucose tabs, gels, or hard candy that won’t melt in a hot climate.
  • Protein Snacks: Nuts or jerky to stabilize after a correction.
  • Emergency Glucagon: Ensure it’s unexpired and that your travel companion knows how to use it.

3. The Paperwork

  • Doctor’s Letter: Stating you have T1D and must carry needles, pumps, and liquids.
  • Prescription Copies: Physical or digital copies in case of loss or theft.
  • Travel Insurance: Confirm it covers “pre-existing conditions”

4. Tech & Tools

  • Back-up Meter: Even if you use a sensor, bring a traditional blood glucose meter and strips.
  • Frio Cooling Bags: To keep your insulin at the right temperature without needing a fridge.
  • Medical ID: A bracelet, watch band, or “Medical ID” set up on your phone’s lock screen.

5. The Mindset

  • The “Grace” Buffer: Acknowledge that travel stress and new foods will mess with your numbers. It’s part of the adventure, not a failure.
  • Time Zone Strategy: A plan for adjusting basal rates or long-acting doses during long-haul flights.
